Collective

Collective, directed by Alexander Nanau, begins with the aftermath of the 2015 Colectiv nightclub fire in Bucharest and follows journalists as they investigate serious failures connected to Romania’s healthcare system. At the centre of the film is reporter Cătălin Tolontan and his team, whose work develops through documents, confidential sources and persistent questioning. The documentary was later nominated for two Academy Awards.

For journalists, the film is a powerful lesson in following the evidence beyond the first story. What initially appears to be a tragedy gradually becomes a much broader investigation. The reporters do not stop at official explanations: they compare accounts, examine records and keep asking why apparently isolated problems recur.

Another important lesson concerns source protection and verification. Whistleblowers can open doors, but their claims still need to be tested against documents and independent evidence. The film shows how investigative journalism is built step by step rather than through a single dramatic revelation.
