Journalists are required by law – and by professional codes of conduct – to obscure the faces of anyone under 18. This app, available free for Android, makes that task straightforward. Blur Image – from the Spanish developer Passport – lets you select any picture from your gallery, or take a new one on the spot. Once the photo is on screen, you can edit it in two ways. Along the bottom bar you’ll see two faces (emojis). Tap the first one, on the left, then drag your finger over the area you want to cover. That part of the image will be blurred. In practice, though, the person’s face often remains, in our view, too easy to recognise. The second icon, on the right, lets you “pixelate” the selected area instead. The effect is far more effective at protecting someone’s identity. The controls are intuitive: you can undo your changes with the eraser, save the edited picture with the floppy-disk icon, or share it using the familiar branching-lines symbol.
