Google launched the NotebookLM mobile app in May 2025 for iOS and Android; in July 2026 the service was renamed Gemini Notebook, while remaining the same standalone research product. For journalists, its main strength is simple: instead of asking AI about the whole web, you create a notebook built around your own sources and question those materials directly (Podcast Above AI Generated).
Install the app, sign in with a Google account and open a new or existing notebook. On mobile you can add PDFs, websites, YouTube videos, audio files and copied text. There is an even faster workflow in the field: while reading a webpage or PDF, tap Share → Gemini Notebook to send it directly into your research notebook.
A reporter covering a press conference, for example, can combine the official statement, background documents, an audio recording and previous coverage, then ask: What are the new claims? Where do these documents contradict each other? Which figures should I verify?
The answers are grounded in the material supplied by the user and include citations back to the sources, making it easier to trace a statement before using it in an article. Google nevertheless warns that AI-generated answers can still contain inaccuracies.
Audio Overviews turn the source material into an AI-generated spoken discussion; they can be downloaded inside the app for offline listening, useful while travelling between assignments. The mobile app can also produce flashcards, quizzes, infographics and presentations from source material, although several advanced features remain more complete on the desktop version.
The app requires iOS 17 or later on iPhone/iPad and Android 10 or later on Android phones and tablets. Standard access includes usage limits; paid Google AI plans raise them. For a journalist, Gemini Notebook is best viewed not as an automatic writer, but as a portable research assistant: useful for interrogating documents, preparing interviews, comparing sources and finding the relevant passage before the reporting begins.
