As we enter 2026, and the third year since the transformative release of ChatGPT, journalists and media managers are wondering what the next frontier for generative AI and the news will be. We got in touch with some of the most prominent voices working in this space (and put out an open call to our audience) to get a sense of what this year might bring.

This Reuters Institute study tests how ChatGPT-4o, Google Gemini and Perplexity responded to 100 questions about the 2024 UK general election. The researchers analysed 300 answers collected during the two weeks before polling day, including questions based on fact-checks and verified electoral information. ChatGPT and Perplexity usually provided direct answers, while Gemini declined to answer most election-related questions.
