IN THE CITIES. The world’s major metropolises are marked by stark injustice and inequality. Many journalists take it upon themselves to expose these realities. But nothing, like the drone’s gaze from above, can so clearly and concretely reveal the scale of the social and economic divides running through our cities.

The work of South African photojournalist Johnny Miller, Unequal Scenes, is a powerful example. His first images appeared in 2016; a stream of awards followed from 2017 onwards. Miller has filmed and photographed the invisible line separating wealthy districts from the poorest neighbourhoods – in Santa Fe in Mexico, for instance, as well as in South Africa and Tanzania.

Between 2016 and 2018, Miller’s images were exhibited in galleries and museums, including a widely praised show at the Museum of Photography in Thessaloniki, Greece. His most recent recognition came at the Istanbul Photo Awards, with a leading placement in the Nature and Environment category.
