Artificial intelligence and the Newsroom:
App, Software, Hardware.
Bots are shockingly effective at evading cybersecurity protections and paywalls. The economics of online publishers are eroding in real time, and European publishers are being hit hardest. Publishers aren't receiving anything back from the scrapes, and the exchange is getting worse. Robots.txt instructions do very little to stop these bots. The methods these scrapers use to evade detection are the same ones used to access infrastructure or manipulate social media by nation-state hackers and sophisticated cyber-criminals. Bots should not be allowed to mimic humans or other traffic on the web; they should be required to self-identify.
Abstract: As artificial intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly embedded in journalistic practice, debates often frame it as either a disruptive force or a tool for efficiency. This study moves beyond this dichotomy by examining how journalists themselves interpret, negotiate, and position AI within journalism. Drawing on 19 in-depth interviews with Chinese journalists, and informed by boundary work and boundary object perspectives, the study analyses how AI is selectively integrated, justified, and governed across journalistic processes.
From 2 August 2026, Article 50 of the EU AI Act will introduce new transparency requirements for AI-generated and manipulated content in journalism. Audiences must be informed when artificial intelligence has played a significant role in producing or altering what they see, hear or read.
The Insta360 Luna Ultra is a compact gimbal camera designed for journalists who need to shoot professional video while working alone or travelling light. Its 1-inch sensor, dual Leica lenses and 8K recording make it suitable for interviews, reports, documentaries and high-quality B-roll.
The DJI Mic Mini 2 gives journalists a lightweight wireless audio system for interviews, stand-ups, mobile reporting and video journalism. Its two transmitters allow a reporter to record two speakers at the same time, making it particularly useful for interviews and field conversations. Two-level noise cancellation helps keep voices clear in streets, stations, demonstrations and other noisy environments.
The Soundcore Liberty 5 Pro Max can turn a pair of earbuds into a practical reporting tool. Its smart charging case can record in-person interviews, meetings and press conferences, then automatically transcribe them and generate AI summaries with key points. For journalists, this can reduce the time spent taking notes and preparing a first transcript after an assignment.
