Artificial intelligence and the Newsroom:
App, Software, Hardware.
This project asks a crucial question for newsrooms: how should large language models be evaluated specifically for journalistic work? Developed after a workshop at Northwestern University’s Knight Lab, it brings together journalists and researchers to identify tasks, values and criteria that matter in real news production. The aim is to move beyond generic AI benchmarks and test models on activities such as reporting, writing, verification and information processing.
Launched in France in 2023 and concluded in 2024, the États généraux de l’information examined how to protect reliable, independent and pluralistic journalism in the digital age. The initiative brought together journalists, media executives, researchers and citizens to analyse challenges ranging from disinformation to media concentration and technological disruption. Its final report proposes 15 major measures designed to strengthen the public information space in France and Europe.
The Tascam Portacapture X8 is a portable recorder designed for journalists who need high-quality audio during interviews, press conferences and field reporting. Its detachable condenser microphones and four additional XLR/TRS inputs make it possible to record several speakers or external microphones simultaneously. The 32-bit float recording system greatly reduces the risk of losing important material because voices were recorded too loudly or too softly. Preset modes for voice, podcasts and field recording simplify operation even when a journalist has to work quickly and without an audio technician.
This case study shows how Mexico’s Televisa used Viz Mosart to automate key functions inside its television news control room. The system can coordinate video, audio, graphics, lighting and playout from a single interface, allowing one operator to manage tasks previously handled by several people. Televisa says the technology improved production accuracy, reduced errors and allowed part of the control-room staff to be reassigned to other roles. Viz Mosart also integrates with newsroom systems such as Avid iNews, turning journalists’ scripts and rundowns into automated production commands.
In 2023, the U.S. Copyright Office ruled that images generated with Midjourney for the comic Zarya of the Dawn could not receive copyright protection because they were not the product of human authorship. The text written by author Kristina Kashtanova and the selection and arrangement of the comic’s elements, however, remained protected. The decision established an important distinction between works created by humans with AI assistance and material generated directly by an algorithm.
The Tascam DR-100MKIII is a professional portable recorder well suited to interviews, press conferences and field reporting. Its built-in directional microphones allow journalists to start recording immediately, while XLR inputs support professional external microphones and phantom power. It records high-quality WAV audio up to 192 kHz/24-bit, making it suitable for radio, podcasts, documentaries and archival interviews.
The sE X1 A is a condenser microphone well suited to podcasts, voice-overs, interviews and other journalism produced in a controlled indoor environment. Its cardioid pattern focuses on the speaker’s voice while reducing unwanted sound from the sides and rear. A switchable 100 Hz low-cut filter helps remove low-frequency rumble and vibrations, while the -20 dB pad allows the microphone to handle louder sources without distortion.
This YouTube guide offers journalists a practical framework for turning podcasts into effective video products and reaching audiences beyond traditional audio platforms. It explains how to structure a channel, organise full episodes and clips, and use playlists to improve discovery and navigation. Journalists can also learn how to use YouTube Analytics and Google Trends to identify audience interests and develop new editorial ideas.
